Celebrating New Tazewell Train History
The original name of New Tazewell was "COWAN CITY." New Tazewell came into existence in the late 1800’s as a result of the railroad being built in the area. When the railroad bypassed the existing town of Tazewell, a new community developed around the depot. This new area was nicknamed "Train City." Over time, it became known as New Tazewell likely because locals referred to Tazewell as the "old town" and the newer settlement as the "new town." New Tazewell was officially incorporated in the 1920’s. Although this original charter was later voted out, New Tazewell was reincorporated in 1954.
